Research has shown that where and how you eat is very important; perhaps as much as what you eat. Your dining room does not consist of only dining chairs and dining room table; it is also about ambience, about a welcoming and warm look. The dining room should be a place that you enjoy being in, not just a place to sit and eat your meals.

Accessories: Collect interesting dining room accessories, such an unusual cake platter, Pasta containers, Spice Bottles, Handmade or hand painted pitcher or vase etc. A beautiful vase for the center of the dining table or to place on your dining room hutch, makes an interesting focal point and adds a lovely decorating accent for the room. A cake platter or a decorative salver can be both functional as well as good to look at. It can be used to serve a dessert like a cake or to serve hors d’ouvres or other snacks. Decorative elements such as wall art, photo frames or curios can be used, to create some appealing accents but do not use too many; the drawing room is a better place for displaying those.

Arranging the Furniture: Clutter is never attractive, so try not to crowd too many pieces of dining room furniture into your dining space. Pick a few well matched pieces of furniture; perhaps even a dining room set, so that the room looks well balanced and well laid out. While the dining table and chairs should ideally always be in the centre, you can create a sense of balance by choosing some corner cabinets, to offset the table and chairs or a sideboard on one side with a matching chest of drawers on the other side of the room to give a sense of elegance and also practical storage options.

Visual Impact: Two things create the maximum visual impact: lighting and the color scheme. Don’t be a slave to color coordination. If everything is too color coordinated, the final appearance will be bland and unexciting. Contrasts work better to make a visual impact. For instance if your dining room furniture is made up of dark materials, use light colored table linen, or put light colors on the walls. If your walls are light colored, use bright and cheerful colors for your place mats or the kind of crockery that you use. Mix and match to achieve an interesting and colorful palette that will make the best visual impact.

Also choose your lighting with care, you could decide to go in for a central chandelier (make sure it is not too big for the room, otherwise it will give the impression of clutter) and then use a few other spot lights to highlight some particular pieces of furniture or decorative objects around the room. If you want to use a chandelier, make sure however that your ceiling is high enough, otherwise you would be better advised to use some well placed table or floor lamps. Heavy drapes and tapestry may not be the best option for your dining room, a light and airy look usually works better for this space.

Pair Amish furniture with classic lighting and light colors for a warm ambience. A trestle table with contemporary chairs would make an interesting combination.

Your choice of lights is one of the most important aspects of your interior design and also one where you have the most control. The lights that you select will enhance the colors and tones of a room, showcase particular pieces of sculpture, artwork, or furniture, and provide the lighting needed to maximize the room’s full potential. Whether it is watching television, creating a family entertainment room, or using lighting to enhance work related tasks, the lighting fixtures that you choose are paramount to ensuring that your room is not only stylish and decorative but one that is amply lit for entertainment purposes and other activities.

The first priority of choosing lights must be practicality. If a room looks marvelous yet isn’t functional you and those who spend time in the room will suffer. In fact, if the room is used for activities such as playing video games, reading, sewing, or other crafts and there isn’t a sufficient amount of viewing light, eyesight may become strained and ultimately impaired. Therefore, it is an absolute necessity that each room has the level of lighting required to perform all tasks easily and without visual strain. When choosing lights for tasks, be sure to select lights that have adjustable settings and place them in a location to reduce the chance of glare.

Using spotlights is an excellent design technique for highlighting or accenting a specific piece or showcasing your favorite piece of furniture. Spot lights or accent lights may be used in any room and are perfect for creating a mood by featuring an aspect or element that you would like to be the room’s central focal point. For instance, if you have a library and would like to focus on your bookshelves, you can add a spotlight to aim directly at the shelves. In a living room, you may want to set up individual spotlights to illuminate your favorite sculpture or framed works of art.

When planning your lighting fixtures, it is important to take into consideration the needs and uses of each room. Every room has a different use and purpose therefore its lighting needs are different. It is also important to make certain that you select lighting and light fixtures that provide you with plenty of control. You want to avoid lighting that is either always bright or permanently dim. By planning your lighting needs ahead of time, you can avoid many of the mistakes that are commonly made. It’s also important to consider the fact that many rooms are used for various purposes. For instance, a dining room may be where holiday celebrations are held as well as family entertainment or games. By choosing adjustable light fixtures, you can easily accommodate all of the activities that may take place in one specific room.

Ambient lighting is an absolute necessity as it provides the general lighting that a room will receive. By using a dimmer, you can lower the amount of brightness and illumination simply and efficiently. In addition to ambient lighting, consider choosing wall sconces, floor lights, and table lights to ensure that you can easily create the desired mood that your interior design expresses.

One of the most wonderful things about house floor plan design is that the floor plans can be tailored to suit individual or family needs. House plans can be modified based on a standard modular design or custom drafted by an architect.

Obviously, the custom drafted house floor plan design is going to be the more costly option. If you have specific design requests, however, an architectual draft might be better able to serve your needs. Modifying a standard modular design can be accomplished with relative ease, but the modifications available may somewhat limited.

Another option exists for the hands on do-it-yourself type person. A number of house floor plan software programs exist to help design everything from house blueprints and landscapes to interior design layouts. Plumbing and electrical layouts can also be added to these computer drawn designs.

Regardless of which option you choose, when deciding on your house floor plan design the flow of house traffic should be an important consideration. The following questions should be asked when planning the layout of your new home:

1. Which room does the family congregate in most when they are together? Some families gather in the living room or den while others gravitate more toward the kitchen or possibly even the patio in the back yard.

2. Which door do family members use most when entering or leaving the home? While most families use the front door, there are some who prefer the garage door or a side entrance.

3. How close should the secondary bedrooms be in relation to the master suite? Couples with small children may choose to build the bedrooms closer together in order to avoid long trips down the hall in the middle of the night. Couples with teenagers at home may elect to build the children’s bed rooms at the opposite end of the house to the master suite. This approach will cut down on the noise level.

House floor plan design can be used at every stage of the building process to make certain that the completed home has the look, feel, and functionality that will serve well for years to come.
