One important part of herb gardening is drying the herbs for use during the winter months, especially if you plan on cooking with them. First the tops of leafy herbs have to be cut, washed, and hung up for the water to evaporate. Then, tie stems together and hang up in a paper bag to dry. After two to three weeks they must be removed; crumble the leaves, dry them out in the oven, and store in a glass jar.

Herb gardening allows gardeners to use herbs from their own garden for cooking, looks, and smell. Herb gardening will produce much fresher herbs with more flavor than store-bought herbs, and are a lot cheaper.

Your outdoor living spaces should suit your family’s lifestyle as well as be an extension of your indoor living areas. High traffic areas of your landscape, such as driveways, car yard, paths, and walkways must, first and foremost, be functional. Depending on how your house is positioned on your lot, you may have a front door and pathway to the street with a side door to your driveway and garage, vice versa, or only one main point of entry for both. Whichever the case, walks, driveways, and parking must be situated to provide easy access from points of entry to your house, garage (if applicable), and of course, the entrance to your home. Depending on your yard, the architectural style of your house, and your family’s lifestyle and habits, plan these areas with access in mind.

Walkways and driveway surfaces should be easy to maintain and durable enough to withstand the level of traffic they receive. High traffic areas are best suited to paving or some other hard surfacing. In the long run, the initial expense of doing so is more than compensated in the reduction of maintenance and amendments required by gravel, dirt, bark, brick work, or sand. Walkways and paths that are less traveled or used are fine with those less costly ground covers.

Driveways must also be wide enough at the street to accommodate vehicles that need to merge easily into the flow of traffic. Common sense dictates that the higher the speed of traffic on your street, the greater the view and the width of the start of your driveway. You need to be well-able to view oncoming traffic from your driveway. Tree and shrub buffers are good for increasing privacy and reducing noise from street traffic, but become hazardous additions when they obstruct your view of the street at your driveway entrance. You need to be able to view traffic coming from both directions, too – both on your street and, if yours is extensive, in your driveway. If surrounding trees or shrubs impede your view, place a mirror or reflecting device on an appropriate telephone pole or tree so you can see oncoming traffic.

Some typically functional dimensions for walkways and driveways? Walkways for more than one person need to be designed are best designed at a width of at least four feet; walkways and paths for the single stroller ar most comfortable at 2 ½ feet wide. A driveway for one vehicle is usually at least 8 feet wide; a two-car drive needs at least 14 feet. Once you have planned for your permanent, hardscape features, such as driveways, paths, and walkways, you can design for your plantings and implement them to suit your site and your preferences.

Once you have done so, plot your desired areas for these activities on your site plan, keeping in mind the different living areas inside your home. It is best to draw them into a rough house layout on your site plan. Activity areas can include a sports area, dining area, public zone, pool- or pondside, entrance, living area, leisure or quiet area, storage, work area, and vegetable and flower gardens. Likewise, you may want to buffer or add privacy fences or hedging to block your children’s view of certain aspects on abutting properties.

For younger children, an outdoor environment should encourage play by inviting them into it with easy access, open, flowing, and relaxed spaces, and clear movement from indoors to outdoors. Your landscape should stimulate the senses with change and contrasts in scale, light, texture, and color, provide diverse experiences, and offer safe ground cover and places for creative play. If you have pets, consider both their needs and those of your neighbors. Make notes of all aspects of your current landscape and those you desire to implement. It can be helpful to take a poll of your family members, asking them what they want, what they don’t like, and so on. Once you are done with your initial plot plan, you can transfer it onto graph paper and draw areas and certain features to scale.

If your walls are light colored, use bright and cheerful colors for your place mats or the kind of crockery that you use. Mix and match to achieve an interesting and colorful palette that will make the best visual impact.

Also choose your lighting with care, you could decide to go in for a central chandelier (make sure it is not too big for the room, otherwise it will give the impression of clutter) and then use a few other spot lights to highlight some particular pieces of furniture or decorative objects around the room. If you want to use a chandelier, make sure however that your ceiling is high enough, otherwise you would be better advised to use some well placed table or floor lamps.
